Bananas South Africa and Retroviral Recreate 3 Decades of Football History for Castle Lager

Giant Films director WARD has teamed up with Bananas South Africa and Retroviral to launch Castle Lager’s new sponsorship platform, ‘Here’s To The Fans That Stood The Test Of Time’, a cinematic tribute to the supporters who stayed loyal to Bafana Bafana through every era of South African football.
Spanning three decades, the film recreates defining moments in the nation’s football history – from the optimism of the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations through to Bafana Bafana’s anticipated return to football’s biggest stage in 2026. Rather than relying on archive footage, WARD (Paul Ward) approaches the film with an emotional realism that focuses on the intimate ways football lives within communities and across generations, allowing audiences to move through South Africa’s football history alongside the fans who experienced it.
“From AFCON ’96 to FIFA World Cup 2026, WARD and his team painstakingly recreated the near misses, the heartbreak, the rebuilding years and the moments that united a nation with an attention to craft he has become famous for,” says Justin Gomes, ECD/founder Bananas. “The archival-inspired cinematography, period-correct jerseys, thousands of authentic makarapas and generational stadium culture were all designed to make the film feel less like advertising and more like memory itself. WARD’s process was always rooted in emotional authenticity, recreating not just how each era looked, but how it felt to live through it as a fan.”
A striking visual motif of fans rising in celebration and sinking back into their seats in defeat mirrors the emotional highs and lows of Bafana’s journey, grounding the film in the rituals and behaviours generations of South Africans recognise instinctively.
The emotional backbone of the campaign comes from a reinterpretation of ‘Take Yo’ Praise’ by Camille Yarbrough, famously sampled by Fatboy Slim in ‘Praise You’. Re-recorded and reimagined by Pressure Cooker Studios, the track features vocals by Mbali Makhoba of Freshlyground alongside a local choir, transforming the classic into a haunting cinematic anthem layered with rich sound design and emotional texture.
For WARD, the campaign became a tribute to the generation of fans who never left, “30 years of pride, passion, heartbreak and euphoria. This one is for the fans, who stood the test of time”.
